"The next tissue in line to be sacrificed after stored body fat is MUSCLE. Long before the body starts to metabolize muscle tissue for energy we’re going to give it more than enough reasons to hold onto that muscle and create new layers in response to the intense training placed upon it while supplying the material needed for building that tissue." -- Excerpt from The 1st & 2nd HITs

Get Lean First!

"God gave humans the incredible ability to survive under many conditions. The human metabolism functions primarily for survival with little concern for the aesthetics of a pleasing physique with lots of muscle and low body fat. In recognition of this fact, it becomes important to stay one step ahead of the metabolic changes that can be incurred by prolonged dieting. Short term changes barely ring your “metabolic bell”, but if you go too long on a particular low calorie plan without making proper adjustments along the way, WATCH OUT! Five alarm fire bells go off internally and the battle to retain every available calorie for survival begins…….you’ve hit a plateau and have even begun to gain body fat on the restricted diet plan that saw you peeling pounds of fat off just weeks earlier."---read the rest of the "Get Lean First!" program and learn how to avoid this mistake!

Skinny Kid Growing!!!
The kids. The kids. This past summer I trained 7 teenage boys. In the Golds Gym where I trained them I had been asked so many times about the status of one of them in particular. He came to me at 6 feet tall and weighing 120 lbs. even. His uncle brought him to train with me on July 9th. Usually I don't like to discuss anything about my clients with other members of the gym, but in this case it was quite noticeable that the biggest guys in the gym were actually concerned for "Brian". They could really relate to him, much like I could as we all seemed to be former "skinnys". The guys in the gym not only asked about him behind his back, but they also went out of their way to introduce themselves to Brian and even tell part of their own testimonies. Each story told got more amazing than the last. guys told how they were 110, 140, or even 125 lbs in high school (like Brian) and how they overcame their condition through bodybuilding.
Now Brian was like a lot of teenagers in the way that he has to go to school, has some friends, a little brother and both parents involved in his daily schedule. He ate 3 meals a day like most kids, but both of his parents had been thin most of their lives and now his genetics had left him on the thin side with extremely low self esteem (these are his actual words to me during our first workout).
I began training him 3X per week for the first month and he actually packed on 7 quality pounds while his strength skyrocketed. I knew it could have been much more of a weight gain, but his old habits of eating only three meals a day were hard to break. The guys in the gym, meanwhile, would ask me for daily reports of his gains. I would sometimes show frustration because I knew how much more he could get out of this if he would only eat as I had instructed him (2 quality snacks along with the 3 basic, high calorie meals his mom made/bought for him.)
In month two, school began so we cut him down to 2X per week in the gym. These sessions were short, as in 40-45 minutes (after warm ups), with only 1 or 2 sets per body part (!!!) He did only one set after he was able to "learn" the exercises and give nearly 100% effort. Brian doesn't play any sports at this point due to his low self esteem and thin body, so I act as both trainer and coach. The trainer side of me can sympathize with his challenges, but the coach side of me is brutally hard and honest with him, as I am with all the boys I train. THOSE BOYS CAN TAKE A LOT! Not only can they take a lot, but they can GIVE A LOT! I push each one mentally as well as physically to the point where some of them get quite angry with me. They don't dare say it to me, but they show it. Back to Brian.............Those two sessions were hard. I also instructed him to eat his regular meals, but now he should drink a couple of weight gainers between those meals as opposed to always trying to eat food. During school it is always easier for the boys to take their shaker cup on a bathroom break, drink it down, then rinse the cup and be back in class in under 5 minutes.
Now Brian had many days wherein he missed many meals, which seemed to upset me more than him. He actually continued to gain muscle to the point where he weighed in a total of 13 pounds heavier, at 133, after the 6th week! This is with literally zero body fat on his waist, or anywhere for that matter.
The guys in the gym see the difference and almost seem relieved. I, on the other hand, am unsatisfied. That's the coach side of me. At this point, I continue to train Brian and see his personality changing with the changes in his body. The personality is of course getting more outgoing and confident. Boys are a different breed. I have a personal opinion which the parents of my boys have heard. it's one wherein the boys are pushed very hard, they are not pampered, they are not given any slack, and GOD FORBID that they even try to use excuses with me for any of their shortcomings or lack of effort in or out of the gym. Each one of them has homework assignments that I give to them, whether it's in the form of diet or exercise, or even sending me emails in order to stay in constant contact (this has been essential to the success I've had with the boys along with using basic Biblical principles and truths on them at every turn.)

A Dream Realized
As of June 12th, a decade long dream of mine will be realized. God has delivered to my family on that day the following;
No longer will I be commuting across LA to train my clients.
All in-the-gym clients I train will be at Golds Gym/Pasadena.
The time spent with my wife and children will increase fourfold.
There has already been financial INCREASE from making this move.
This may seem like a pretty small dream to some of you, but there's more to it than you can imagine without knowing the facts;
Over the last few years, my wife and myself were lead by God to move to the Pasadena area of California. I had a pretty good training business set up on the west side of LA and continued to train those clients in the first half of the day, Monday through Saturday, with all other business being conducted close to home at Golds Gym/Pasadena. LA traffic is extremely heavy any other times of day, so it was only cost-effective to do this schedule as I just mentioned.God also blessed us with children in the past three years, and now they're at the age when they know to ask "Daddy at work?" when I'm not home.
I knew going into this that this schedule would have to change because it meant that I was spending 10-16 hours per day away from home and only 2-3 with my family. That 2-3 hours was not what I would consider quality time as I was physically and mentally tired.
My wife and myself made our requests known to God. We prayed and agreed that I had to be with my family more, with no more time on the opposite end of town, and yet, it all had to be done with financial INCREASE. We believe our God is a God of INCREASE. He brings no lack or sorrow with it. So it made perfect sense to the both of us that this all would be accomplished while accompanied by INCREASE. All we had left to do was agree on a date to have all of this done by. We agreed on July 31st, 2007 as being the last possible day that I would be on the westside for training clients. I was ecstatic to say the least! Every time we spoke I brought it up as something I was pumped up about and we ended up thanking God for it, over and over again.
Then three weeks ago, I was leaving work on the westside when I heard my mouth say "Lord, deliver me from this place, now, please!". Immediately I wondered what He would do with my urgent request.
Not 48 hours later I had a good friend of mine from World Gym/Marina Del Rey (the gym I had been training clients at for years on the westside) tell me to get my clients out as quickly as possible as the gym was going to shut down and noone knew about it yet! Literally, I was as calm as could be since I knew my God was leading me. Over the course of the next week several new clients materialized in the Pasadena location, along with a couple of westside clients who are choosing to continue to train with me in Pasadena! The net effect had already been a financial increase.
"I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning
anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My
Father in heaven." Matthew 18:19
In all honesty, this has been an exciting month. As the business has started to shift over to Pasadena, I have more energy and time for my wife. I can play with my kids and not feel rushed because of the need to get to bed early for work the next day.
A Son's Perspective of His Dad
This past month I started training another teenage boy (actually, he's 19, and a freshman in college, so I suppose we need to call him a man). We'll call him "Sam" for this story since he and his dad are both so humble that I'm sure they really would prefer me not to write to you about them.
His dad is a well known, popular person in the LA area. He's actually what most people would call a "celebrity", yet in no way have I ever seen him act the part.
It's obvious that his dad loves him dearly as he's flat out told me so during several of our discussions regarding his son's training prior to me actually training him. As I have mentioned before, it's a total priviledge to have someone trust you with the care of their body, but it's way more intense when it's a parent trusting you with their kid!
After the first couple of training sessions, I realized that Sam doesn't speak much. I love this because he is nearly void of all worldly dramatic talk. He doesn't waste his words, but boy, when he does speak, there have been nuggets that I've picked up on that would knock the strongest man to his knees. One in particular came across this past week;
We had finished training that day, and as I was talking with him, I mentioned how excited his dad was for him to be training and growing some new muscle. Most young men that I've had conversations with about the excitement their parents have for them usually has them rolling their eyes and mumbling something like "Yea.....I know, I know.", but on this occasion, our man Sam comes out with possibly one of the most meaningful statements. He tells me....
"My dad is a great father!"
Please let that one sink in for a moment. This is a testosterone filled, freshman in college, from an affluent family, with a celebrity for a dad, speaking boldly of his own dad, during a time when so many celebrity kids are shown weekly on the TV being arrested for so many flagrant and obnoxious violations of our society's laws. (I know, that was a huge run-on sentence, but you get the point now, right?) So many celebrity teens are figuratively sticking their middle fingers up at the world that supports them and look down upon those that have less than they do (or less than their parents have earned.)
If you are a parent, you know the meaning of these words already. They represent the fruit of almost two decades of successful parenting on the part of Sam's dad. Any parent would be moved to tears upon hearing that their son had spoken of them like this in a casual setting! He wasn't just agreeing with anything I had said, or lead him to say. He really meant it!
If you're not a parent, then the question you'll come around to eventually is whether you would say the same thing about your own parents. Wow! This made me so very interested in everything Sam and his dad had to say. I know some things already about how Sam's dad thinks and some of his beliefs on raising children, and at this point I look forward to hearing more!
*****Yes, I told his dad what he had said. Do you think I would rob him of what must be one of the greatest joys a dad could have?
*****Yes, he looked like he was going to cry upon hearing what Sam said!
Until next month......

May 2007 Newsletter
This month I have to share two related stories of success in fat loss on the parts of two people that aren't even clients of mine. The reason their stories are so significant is that they have one thing in common; 100% dedication to their diets. Their results, which you will now read about, are nothing short of amazing in the gyms today.
Subject #1---Esteban
Esteban is one of the regulars at Golds Gym/Pasadena. I've seen him training there for a couple of years, and he has a nice physique to show for it as well. There has always been a layer of fat covering the muscles he has developed, which only seemed to get thicker after he had surgery on one of his knees last year and he was less mobile because of it.
In early 2007 I saw him hobbling around the gym training with relatively light weights on all body parts trying to regain some of his strength after the surgery. The months seem to have blown by without me noticing much until last Saturday when he was training in a tank top and WOW!, what a difference; he was lean, hard and looked to have put on a few pounds of good muscle. I quickly moved in for the questioning and was told right off the bat that he had lost 46 lbs. in the last 6 weeks! This is awesome, I thought, and asked him how he did it. He related that one of the other trainers in the gym had given him a diet to follow, and he simply followed it along with the weight training. That's all. Simple. No extras, and NO CARDIO! The diet, of course, was low calorie and very well balanced, (just like mine for my clients), with some carbs, proteins, and fats thrown all over the plan.
So, what's the big deal, right? Why am I making any kind of deal out about this?
Well, it seems that Esteban told me that he had been given a diet from the same trainer earlier and he had only marginal results. He had lost only 10 lbs. that last time. He told me he cheated last time, so it didn't work. I thought he had skipped meals or ate junk food when he wasn't supposed to, but Esteban told me that wasn't the case at all. His form of cheating was doing cardio behind the trainer's back!!! The trainer didn't want him doing any cardio, just the weights, and he would get the results from the diet. Esteban didn't trust that, so he threw it in when the trainer wasn't around. He only lost 10 lbs. that way. The next time he had the trainer do his diet, he decided to obey everything he said, so the cardio was out, and he lost 46 lbs. in just 6 weeks. He must have said the words "I still can't believe it!" five full times during our conversation.
What's the lesson?
A good diet that is followed 100% along with a great weight training routine will increase your muscle enough to speed up your metabolism to a point where it will burn body fat 24 hours per day. Doing cardio on top of the diet and weights will burn more calories, but that extra activity may actually hinder your muscular development. Muscular development is so very important obviously, to burning body fat (moreso even than your mind may let you believe), so you don't want to hinder that new development of muscle. Esteban found out firsthand how LESS effective his overall routine was by adding cardio. This is heresy in the gym, but it's the truth.
Subject #2---My Mom!!!
Three weeks ago my mom came to visit and upon picking her up at the airport, it was quickly evident that something had changed.................she was a whopping 25lbs down in bodyweight (my mom's only 5'2" tall, so this is huge)!
She was quick to let out with the info; the Sonoma Diet. It might as well have been the Pasadena diet, because as I checked out what she was doing, it was a good diet with several variations, or phases, which would allow a good long-term body fat loss if followed correctly with near 100% precision, which she was doing. Most diet plans out there, with every catchy name imaginable, seem to work if you give it 100% effort. She was doing it and it showed.
With all due respect to the creators of The Sonoma Diet, it is a very good diet and menu plan with loads of info and food options. I fearlessly recommend it to all who would care to give it a great try. It obviously works and my mom has been on it for a while, so it also is a comfortable lifestyle menu.
Regarding exercise; she did next to none. Literally, my mom takes a walk when she has the time. She works full time and has grandkids. That's the extent of her cardio and weight training.
The moral to both of these great examples is that the dedication they put into their diets really paid off with an equal return. The seed they sowed turned into a certain harvest.
If I can be of service to any of you in this realm, whether it be with your diet or with the in-the-gym training, please feel free to contact me with your request and let's get it going, but only do it if you are ready to give it your best shot.
May God Bless You
